Healthy Aging and Changing Demographics

As we always say, “We’re not anti-aging; we’re completely, totally and 100% for it!”

September is here. School has started, winter holiday decorations are all over the stores, and we’re heading into Autumn.  September also brings Healthy Aging Month. For over 30 years it’s been part of the National Healthy Aging campaign to continue to draw attention to healthy, active lifestyles at any age. It's also the perfect time to remind ourselves that taking care of our health and well-being is an ongoing journey.

A fascinating aspect of healthy aging: the shifting demographics in the United States.

We're witnessing a generational change as Baby Boomers make way for Millennials. And guess what? It has a lot to do with taking care of ourselves, which includes exercise, healthy eating, self-care, mental well-being, and, of course, the use of nutritional supplements.

The Rise of Millennials

In 2019, Millennials took the lead as the largest living adult generation in the United States, surpassing Baby Boomers, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's population estimates.

AsGroup of millennials holding digital devices while standing against a wall of July 1, 2019, Millennials, defined as individuals aged 23 to 38 that year, totaled 72.1 million in numbers. Meanwhile, Boomers, aged between 55 to 73 at that time, numbered 71.6 million. Generation X, those aged 39 to 54, amounted to 65.2 million and is expected to surpass the Boomer generation in population by 2028.

Millennials, or Gen Y, are a generation born between 1981 and 1996. They grew up during the rapid rise of technology and the internet, shaping their values, behaviors, and perspectives. Millennials are known for their adaptability, digital fluency, and a strong desire for work-life balance. They are often seen as socially conscious, valuing experiences over material possessions. As the largest living adult generation in the United States, they continue to influence consumer trends, workplace dynamics, and various issues in our society.

Baby Boomers are the generation born between 1946 and 1964, characterized by a significant increase in birth rates following World War II. They've played a pivotal role in shaping modern society, influencing culture, politics, and the workforce.

As Baby Boomers are now in or entering their senior years, they have a strong emphasis on health, retirement planning, and active lifestyles. This group experienced post-war prosperity and witnessed remarkable cultural and technological changes. Their experiences and contributions have left an indelible mark on the world.

Did you know that by 2030 all Baby Boomers will be at least 65 years old?

Generation X on the Horizon

Generation X, better known as Gen X, is the generation born between 1965 and 1980. Sandwiched between the Smiling Generation X coupleBaby Boomers and the Millennials, Gen X is often described as the "middle child" of generations. They grew up in a world of significant societal change. Gen Xers have navigated the transition from analog to digital technology and have a unique perspective on work, life, and family. Today, they continue to play a vital role in the workforce and society.

In 2019, they counted about 65.2 million strong. And according to projections, they'll outpace the Baby Boomer generation in numbers by 2028.

Connecting Demographics with Healthy Aging

The changing demographics of the United States present both challenges and opportunities for promoting healthy aging. Here's how these demographic shifts relate to Healthy Aging Month:

Staying Active for a Lifetime:
One key aspect of healthy aging is staying physically active. Try activities like walking, biking, yoga, or tai chi to enhance your mood, energy levels, and overall emotional well-being. Or keep up hitting the waves! Baby boomer on a surfboard in the water

Change up your daily routine. Exercise and physical activity fall into four basic categories—endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Doing them all will give you more benefits, reduce boredom, and cut your risk of injury.

Nourishing our Bodies and Minds:
Eating a balanced and nutritious diet plays a significant role in healthy aging. Consuming a variety of foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber supports our body's functions and helps prevent chronic diseases. Opting for whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables can make a positive impact on your health.

Caring for Mental Health:
Healthy aging isn't just about our physical health; it's also about our mental well-being. Engaging in activities that challenge your mind can help keep your cognitive functions sharp. Staying socially connected and seeking support when needed are important aspects of maintaining good mental health. Many people take supplements that are considered to help reduce stress and promote mental health, such as magnesium, vitamin D, and B-complex vitamins.

Adding Nutritional Supplements to your Daily Routine:
As we’ve mentioned numerous times over the years, our nutritional supplements help support overall health and wellness. Many of us, (Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Gen Xers included) take supplements as a way to support our overall health and wellbeing. Colorful capsule spilling out vitamins

Supplements and homeopathics can also help support specific health concerns, such as taking iron to help with an iron deficiency or Vitamin C to help boost your immune system

Supplements can help support a vegetarian or vegan diets. They can help fill in these nutritional gaps and help ensure that they you are getting all the necessary vitamins and minerals.

Healthcare Changes:
As Baby Boomers age, there is a growing need for healthcare services tailored to seniors. This includes geriatric medicine, long-term care options, and preventative care to support healthy aging.

Staying connected:
Maintaining social connections, in real life and online, becomes increasingly important. Being part of a community, spending time with friends and family, and participating in social activities all contribute to our overall happiness and sense of belonging.
